Trivia # 7

'Sorted For E's & Wizz'

The song was first performed at the Glastonbury Festival in 1995, where Cocker explained his inspiration. “‘Sorted for E’s and Wizz’ is a phrase a girl that I met in Sheffield once told me… and she went to see The Stone Roses at Spike Island and I said “what do you remember about it?”. And she said “Well there were all these blokes walking around saying ‘Is everybody sorted for E’s and wizz?’” And that’s all she remembered about it and I thought it was a good phrase.”

PS: E’s is a reference for ecstasy and Wizz for speed.

Pulp have been named as the recipients of the Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music Award at this year’s NME Awards.

The Sheffield band will pick up the gong at the O2 Academy Brixton ceremony on February 29, and will also play live on the night.

Speaking about the award, Pulp said: “I guess we always knew we stood out - but to be called ‘outstanding’ is great. Thank you.”

The awards ceremony will be the band’s first UK performance of the year, following last year’s reunion gigs and festival dates. To check the availability of NME Awards ticketsand get all the latest listings, go to NME.COM/TICKETS now, or call 0871 230 1094.

Jarvis Cocker and co are also scheduled to play a number of gigs later this year, with dates in the US at Coachella festival, San Francisco and New York penciled in along with a slot at Spain’s SOS Festival.

Pulp’s reunion dates last summer - which kicked off officially with their Primavera show, and continued with their 'surprise' performance at Glastonbury - were their first since going on hiatus since 2002.

The band also performed at the Isle Of Wight Festival, Wireless, Reading and Leeds festivals and played two sold-out shows at London’s O2 Academy Brixton.

Meanwhile, Arctic Monkeys, Noel Gallagher, Lana Del Rey, The Vaccines and Odd Future are among the acts nominated for gongs at this year’s NME Awards.

Arctic Monkeys – who’ve scored seven nominations in total – will go head-to-head with Kasabian, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Horrors and Muse for the Best British Bandaward. The Best New Band category, meanwhile, will be contested by Lana Del Rey, Tribes, The Vaccines, WU LYF and Foster The People.

Kasabian, Florence And The Machine, Muse are up for three gongs each, while The Horrors, Hurts and The Vaccines are among the acts nominated for two awards.

Meanwhile, Noel Gallagher – who’s due to pick up our prestigious Godlike Genius Award on the night – is up for another four gongs, including Best Album for ‘Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ and Best Solo Artist.
